Abusive Debt Collectors in Tennessee

The Knoxville News-Sentinel did a report on abusive debt collection practices being used against Tennessee residents. Despite anti-abuse laws that have been around for three decades, creditors still abuse their right to collect and run afoul of consumer protection laws. The reason they do it is because they can get away with it…if you let them. The best thing you can do is put the law to work for you. It’s on your side, you just need someone to help you enforce it. If you’re considering filing for bankruptcy, call the Knoxville bankruptcy attorney you can trust for a free debt consultation. We can stop the creditor harassment immediately and prevent any future problems.

Such confrontations are growing more commonplace across East Tennessee, with debt collectors adopting more aggressive tactics to collect overdue payments and debtors complaining they are being hounded by collection agencies using shady and possibly illegal practices.

Many angry debtors are fighting back.

Complaints from East Tennesseans against debt collectors have jumped sharply this year and are projected to be more than 36 percent higher than just two years ago, according to federal data.

A review of Federal Trade Commission records shows that East Tennesseans have filed nearly 700 complaints against debt collectors from 2007 through last May, the last complete month for which the News Sentinel obtained data.
