It is certainly not something any of us would ever want to see happen but it is interesting that Adam Smith outlined some interesting parallels to our own fiscal crisis so many years ago. You may remember a story from the summer of 2009 about a swim club in Pennsylvania that was accused of discriminating against minorities by trying to exclude them from participating in summer swimming. The director used some very poorly chosen words to describe why they later uninvited the group of kids and refunded their money. Was it a case of racism? Did the director simply stick his foot in his mouth? Hard to know exactly what a person’s motives are.

In the end the kids found another place to swim. But now that swim club has filed for bankruptcy. Some people might cheer this with a “that’s-what-they-get” attitude. But the truth is there are some people without a job now who may end up on the bankruptcy rolls themselves. Let’s hope they can find a new job soon.
