What if the U.S. Filed for Bankruptcy

It sounds like an odd thought. Is it even possible? You may remember from high school or college a well-known economist named Adam Smith who wrote The Wealth of Nations. You may remember his famous “invisible hand” that guides nations to prosperity through capitalism and the desire of all to succeed.

Another lesser known part of his book is about if and when a nation should declare itself bankrupt and enter bankruptcy proceedings with its creditors. It is certainly not something any of us would ever want to see happen but it is interesting that Adam Smith outlined some interesting parallels to our own fiscal crisis so many years ago. You can read more about it here at the East Valley Tribune.

PA Swim Club Files for Bankruptcy

You may remember a story from the summer of 2009 about a swim club in Pennsylvania that was accused of discriminating against minorities by trying to exclude them from participating in summer swimming. The director used some very poorly chosen words to describe why they later uninvited the group of kids and refunded their money. Was it a case of racism? Did the director simply stick his foot in his mouth? Hard to know exactly what a person’s motives are.

In the end the kids found another place to swim. But now that swim club has filed for bankruptcy. Some people might cheer this with a “that’s-what-they-get” attitude. But the truth is there are some people without a job now who may end up on the bankruptcy rolls themselves. Let’s hope they can find a new job soon.
